The art of online content writing for beginners

A proverb goes,” Ignorance is bliss!” .However, I believe that learning is so much fun. In every walk of life, you get to learn so much. With this enthusiasm for knowledge, I stepped into the world of website copywriting. Always having had a zeal for serious writing, I never thought that website copywriting could be my cup of tea. But surprisingly, I am fitting myself well in this new arena, and everyday is a new day with a lot to learn.

However, thanks to a pool of articles that I’ve done over a week and some very co-operative colleagues, I am learning the method of how online copywriting is done, though I have a long way to go! Online website content writing is no easy job. It requires a creative mind with a lot of patience and the devotion to learn. At the same time, it is also about meeting deadlines and completion of tasks in time. And despite of all these pressures the finished good has to be crisp, informative and interesting. So the art of copywriting is a herculean job but it all goes easy if you begin to enjoy what you write.

And each day is a day to learn new, interesting things.

So here I am, learning about SEO (search engine optimization), SMO (social media optimization), PPC (pay per click) ads, hosting and blogging. But before becoming a content writer, I never heard about these words and even if I would have, then probably I wouldn’t have taken the initiative to know all about them. But now I have developed an interest to learn all about the web world. In fact I am just beginning to realize, thanks to the internet, that doing business has become a lot easier and thus online copywriter has a very important role to play. However a word of caution- copywriting is   not facile and at times can also get really boring, especially when the products you write for are very dry like garage door repairs, floorings, or car accessories! I mean you cannot get to write for a chocolate or soap all the time! And in advertising convincingly about all these products and services, lie the skills of a good copywriter.

The road to become a copywriter is not an easy path. A lot of brainstorming is done. A lot of research is done on the company. It takes a toll on your grey cells to come up with good ideas and be a successful copywriter. Anyone can write, but not all can come up with ideas! Now that is what distinguishes other writers from copywriters.

In my short journey as a copywriter, I realized a few important things that a good copywriter should always follow. An intelligent copywriter always plays around with words. It’s good to use simpler words but avoid using everyday words. And try to emphasize on certain key words. This will definitely catch the readers’ attention and also help in search engine optimization (SEO) which will maximize the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines.

Also don’t make your work ambiguous. Be clear. Do not beat around the bush. The idea should reach the consumer’s head. If you make him ponder, you might just lose him. So in fact, a copywriter should, in that short span of time write something so interesting that it catches the eyes of the reader and he further inspects what the article is all about.

Therefore, copywriting should be hassle free, attractive reading.

Also, it’s important to give your story a proper link. It should have a head, body and tail.

Stick to one chief component. And then carry on with the flow. Because as the proverb goes, “Too many cooks spoil the broth,” the usage of too many ideas will also blemish your work. Let the reader follow a particular link. Do not confuse him.

Double check what you have written. Be sure of the grammar and language used. Using jargons might not be effective, since the layman cannot understand technical language.

And just keep learning the newer developments happening in the world of internet. A lot of reading will do good. And finally it is your own knack and skills that will help you grow as a content writer, after all not everyone can be a good content writer.

So for more amateur copywriters like me, hope these small instances will help you write quality creative content. After all copywriting is only about your creativity with words.

Happy learning!
