The fuss about Web Content

There are loads of articles on the Internet that preach of Web Content Writing styles and techniques. Now what is different with this article?

Well I am not here to define the Web Content writing parameters nor advocate any techniques. This is simply because Writing is an art form, and you need to understand and finally master it. An individual with a great vocabulary or finesse in grammar is not necessarily a writer.

The overall quality of Web Content is piteous. Web Content Writers have taken the medium for granted. A Web Content Writer need not be proficient in the craft (like a copywriter), but needs to understand the basics of communication. In the end it’s all about conveying the desired message.

There is no definitive style for Web Content. In fact a Web Content Writer should adapt the client’s communication style and adorn it with a selection of rich words. A true writer has a constant urge to probe and is inquisitive by nature.

I have laid down a few norms and things to avoid while writing Web Content:

Understand Your Client’s Product:
Know the product/service in the offering. Spend some time with your client to understand his communication strategy. Do not be overconfident.

KISS:
”Keep it Simple Stupid” that’s what KISS stands for. An average surfer is looking for information and not a good read (he can always pick up a book). Always remember, not all users are proficient in English. You need to speak to a user through your Content.

Question. Probe. Ponder:
To understand the client’s proposition you need to question yourself and probe. Ask yourself -
What does the product do?
What does the client want?
Who is the target audience?
Who is the competition?
What is the motive of the website?

Choose the right set of Words:
You are the person responsible to ornate the website with your choice of words. You need to choose the right words and even place them in the appropriate context. Though keywords are necessary for Search rankings it should be a dominating factor. The art of fusing keywords into rich content is the art.

Proof Check Your Content:
Many Content Writers seem in a hurry. The amount of Copy mistakes on varied websites irks me. I cannot understand why Content Writers never proof check. It is mandatory to proof check every tiny bit.

Read a Lot:
Develop a habit of reading various websites, books, brochures, pamphlets and any reading material you can lay your hands on. You must never stop reading. It helps you improve and understand various styles.

I hope I have not said too much nor said too less. I hope these basic tips (or call them guidelines) will surely help you understand the art of Content writing.

Very informative article on writing. I agree any form of writing has same set of basics, web writing is no different from feature writing or print writing.

Hope to see more articles from you :)

Ye. I agree with Ashwin and John…You simply need to master the art…that’s it

I still feel that the writer could have delved more into the topic. Yet its a great read.
