To A Writer, By A Writer

My desktop wallpaper is a quote by George R. R Martin that says, “Some writers enjoy writing, I am told. Not me. I enjoy having it Written.” This quote was sent to me by my editor on a greyish blue morning, when he realized I had a moment of self-doubt.

There was another quote sent immediately after, that said, “The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt” by Sylvia Plath. This made me think….

Writer – Having this term associated with your name brings in great responsibility. To keep up with this responsibility, writers go through many such greyish-blue mornings of self-introspection. However, the sun shines brighter after every dull morning, and this brightness is brought in by all those wonderful writers, who have written encouraging quotes to motivate other writers and keep them going, when the going gets tough.

It’s a criminal waste of time to doubt your ability as a writer, while in the rat race. The talent to write and express your imagination in words, is truly a special gift. This gift should be valued every second that we live and breathe.

Criticism is part of life; it is best to accept it like a sport and improve our skills with every piece that we write. Let’s change our perspective towards criticism and look at things from a different angle – “People criticize our work because it is worth spending time on.”

There’s a quote by a famous writer named Ray Bradbury, “If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn.

small imageDo not hesitate to write absolutely anything and everything. This is your gift – you have the talent to write and create characters out of every story. You have the ability to sprinkle life into characters and make people believe that, even the wildest imagination can be lived like reality through a good piece of writing.

Joss Whedon rightly said, “I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not. I write to explore all the things I am not.

Remember, as a writer, every word that you write should be worth it. Be a miser while writing, and only use words that are really needed. Choose your words wisely and stay original. Experiment and explore. Anais Nin, another famous writer said, “The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.

There is more to the quote of Sylvia Plath and I love the way she says it, her words look graceful and emit confidence. She said, “And by the way, everything in life is writable about, if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”
