Using Twitter for content marketing

Twitter has rapidly been gaining popularity, and is now the top place for content marketing. You will see many people tweeting headlines or excerpts from their articles or blogs. A lot of readers will read these tweets and proceed to your site or blog to read the rest of what you have written.

It is common knowledge at only 20% of readers actually read the full article after reading a headline. So, the bottom line is that you have to be able to generate really good headlines for people to come to your site or blog.

A headline needs to capture a reader’s mind. You need to give something to the reader in order for him or her to go ahead and read the entire article. Here’s a few ways to do just that.

•    Be really specific about what you are saying
•    Make it sound urgent
•    Be of some use to the reader
•    Convince the reader that your material is unique

It is imperative that you write short headlines on Twitter. Firstly, there’s the 140-character limit which you have to adhere to. The other advantage of writing short headlines is that it will allow your followers to re-tweet your message.  Also, you will need place if you want to give credit to the person who re-tweets your headline.

People often make the silly mistake of writing really short headlines just for the sake of it. Never make this mistake. Always make a headline as short as possible, but never so short that it sounds idiotic.

One way to get a lot of attention is by re-tweeting other peoples’ headlines. There are plenty of people who write substandard headlines, but good copy. By editing these, you can build a good following on Twitter, as you are providing these people with some sort of service.

The moral of this story is, write great, short headlines, and the world will follow you!
