History Of The Microchip


Once upon a time, Jack Kilby was hired by a company called Texas instruments. They were working on the concept of integrated circuits. Their idea was to pack multiple transistors into a chip. Doing that would reduce the distance between circuits and accelerate the flow of instructions in the machines. It was summer thus a lot of Kilby’s colleagues were off on vacations. As Jack Kilby was new at his job, he worked vigorously over the concept. When his colleagues came back from the vacation, they were presented with a prototype of the microchip developed by Jack. He packed many transistors in one chip starting a revolution, which would involve packing hundreds of transistors in a chip.

We live in a world where we are highly dependent on technology. From getting up in the morning to the time we sleep, we make use of machines at every stage of our day and eventually our life. Be it cell phones, laptops, servers, ATM’s, video games or any other major electronic device, the microchip is an integral component of it. Jack Kilby was the pioneer in devising microchips. His invention has changed how the world functions. His efforts to explore the technological world led him to device a chip, which is the base of any modern technology. His theory was developed by American institutes to suit devices, which worked on varied platforms. The Japanese on the other hand spent millions of dollars on innovative designs of the chips and captured major share of the market. The US government retaliated by coming up with three programs, which witnessed a fruitful collaboration between government and industries, ensuring that they were back in the game.

Microchips are made of a material called as silicon. The making, comprises of a complex process, involving chemicals, gases and light. The microchips will continue to be a part of futuristic technology. Let us see, how much the microchip evolves in the future.
