Google Betters its US Search Share in October
According to Hitwise, the popular market analysis company, Google Inc. continued to boost its share in the US Web search market with 71.7 percent in October. This is quite an impressive increase compared to September this year, where it had 71.16% of the search share. Moreover, the current year’s economic slump does not seem to have much affected the giant either as it performed much better than the last year (64.49 percent).
The so far “unbeaten champion” has now widened its lead even further over archrivals Yahoo and Microsoft as the two are still finding ways to put an end to this daunting and continuous domination by Google. No wonder why Google is known to be such a tremendous innovator in the search industry!
Yahoo’s search, though appreciated in some parts of the world, has still lot of catching up to do to even near Google. It continued to lose the share, with just 17.7 percent in October compared to 18.1 percent in September and 21.7 percent last year. However, it still managed to maintain its second spot.
On the other hand, Microsoft, which has spent sleepless nights trying to figure out ways to surpass Google, managed to increase its share in October to 5.4, a mere jump from 5.36 in September. However, it also displayed a dismal show compared to the previous year wherein it had a search share of 7.4 percent.
However, Microsoft has been on a rampant as far as its recent activities are concerned. It is banking heavily on its partnerships and promotions, and making attempts to provide enhanced search features to users and better opportunity to advertisers to earn good returns on investment.
The software leader also unleashed a new ‘SearchPerks’ program last month that allows Live Search users gather rewards points for using their search service, which can be exchanged for various prizes and merchandise.
Another search market player- Ask.com witnessed an even tougher time as its overall share fell from 3.6 percent in September to 3.5 percent in October. It too saw a decrease in its search share compared to the last year (4.8 percent).
Now, it can clearly be understood why the Justice Department was reluctant to allow Google and Yahoo partner in search related advertising.
Looking at HitWise’s report, one can certainly state that Google is the undisputed champion among the search engines and will continue its dominance for several years to come!
